Cuba is one of the first of the USSR's allies in the 20th Century before the 'Soviet Golden age'.

In 1898, the United States went to war with Spain, over Cuba's independence, and eventually won it, and reformed into the Republic of Cuba, which it remained an ally of the US until 1959, when the Cuban Revolutionaries, led by Fidel Castro, overthrew the Government in a Coup d'etat, establishing Cuba as a Communist state, an ally of the USSR.

In 1961, Castro permitted the USSR to install nuclear missle silos on Cuban soil, in anticipation of a Soviet-American war, which came, presumably in 2002.
